At this point anyone who reads my site must find me fascinated with Artificial Intelligence, at least based on my news responses. While not entirely untrue, it is just that the most interesting, not politics related, technology based articles seems to frequently be about AI. Explanation of decisions aside, this week I found an article that goes into detail about neural networks in Artificial Intelligence. Basically Google has been doing some research in how neural networks work. They are specifically studying how AI is able to determine what things are from a picture. The article says that the short answer is a ton of mathematic formulas that people do not follow. However, there is one thing that concerns me greatly in all of this. The article made very clear that people do not truly know how AI makes the associations that it does. The thing I find concerning is AI is a thing that we as humans created and yet it is doing things that we do not understand. This could lead to decisions being made in algorithms that could seriously be harmful. For example, the AI that does the face recognition could pin you as someone who is wanted and alert the NSA. Now that is an extreme example, but it gets the point across. The article also talks about how knowing how AI neural networks work will allow people to isolate mistakes in the algorithms. This is good to know, but why was something made that did things we did not understand in the first place. I am not saying that I am scared of an AI take over, not in the slightest. What I am saying is that we need to make sure that we can monitor our creations instead of just letting them lose. We do not want to create a Frankenstein’s monster that is a marvel that we cannot control.
