This article titled “Why I’m Committed to Creating Humane Technology” featured on Medium, is an inside look at the story of Andrew Dunn, who is the Co-Founder and CEO of Siempo. Siempo is a new phone application available in Beta for Androids that completely changes the user interface of the phone to create ‘phones for humans.’ Siempo uses a variety of techniques to give people more intentional control over their smartphone use so that they can live a healthier, happier life. This article more closely looks at why and how Dunn came to the realization that Siempo was a necessity. For nearly five years of his life, Andrew struggled deeply with smartphone, social media, and internet addiction. This inability to manage his online presence caused him great suffering, as his capacity to intuitively listen to himself diminished, his connection to others worsened, and his schoolwork suffered. After several years of dedication to understanding himself and the intersection between health and technology, Andrew is glad that he experienced these difficulties. Due to his past problems, he now has the context and empathy to create a product that will transform and better individuals’ unhealthy interactions with their smartphones. Personally, the whole idea of Siempo and Andrew’s story excite me greatly. As more people understand the necessity for personal wellness in their lives, more people will become aware of the necessity to regulate their interactions with technology. Likewise, I am studying the ways that social media interfaces can be more healthy, so knowing that I can connect with Andrew and potentially collaborate with his team in some way is incredibly exciting. Even to ask Dunn about some of his research could be helpful on my journey. I believe that this technology will be successful, and I am looking forward to seeing how healthier technologies like Siempo influence both existing and newer user interfaces.
