Ritualization 1-2 paragraphs

-User Experience:

User experience defines a person’s emotions and attitudes toward an application.

-User Interface

User interface indicates the junction between a person and digital devices and includes the screen elements, such as menus and commands, that lead users through an application.

-In the case of meditation applications, the user interface utilizes ritualization in order to cater towards its users and create a specific user experience

Ritualization

“a way of performing certain activities that differentiates them from more conventional ones and ties this difference into a group’s ultimate reality.”

-incredibly important to do more than bring a sense of separation between typical exeriences and one of the app

the ultimate reality part is an essential part of ritualization

-ultimate reality in meditation applications are basically always mindful, peaceful, and at a calmer peace than modern life

(mindfulness an active state of open nonjudgmental awareness of one’s thoughts and emotions.) (Kabat Zinn)

-“While mindfulness is communicated through images and sound, and also narratives, buddhify’s ‘mindful’ ultimate reality is cultivated by the app’s procedural operations.”

-a procedure, a term that describes a step-by-step sequence that emerges from a set of rules for performing a particular operation.”

-Because the procedure/acts of operating an app are so different from the way the mind operates in modern life, a separate space occurs –

“Media technologies, including smartphone apps, always build upon, extend, and modify people’s bodies, senses, and consciousness. Buddhify’s user interface cultivates mindfulness through awareness of one’s breath.”

-the ways that meditation apps procedural operations may feel meditative or enduce relaxing or meditative states even when user isn’t meditative enduces ritualization/separate space

-some of these mechanics are video-game like

Gamification 1 paragraph

-Ritualization through Gamification

applying game-like practices to nongame social fields

-Not all tactics may directly induce calm ultimate reality but still may lead to a future desire to go into this state not seem calm but further creates this separation

– “create micro social places demarcated from the ordinary hubbub of the everyday created by a temporary porous shield that differentiates the user from ordinary life.”

***While it has a family resemblance to the Buddhist concept of ānāpānasmṛti, or “mindfulness of breathing,” and is informed by Protestant rejection of ritual and celebration of inner experience, the app uses game mechanics, first pioneered by video game design.”

Quote is too specific to Buddhify, but they strike a chord on how ritualization/procedure (in this case gamification) help lead to an ultimate reality
