SUMMARY OF LET’S PLAY STREAMING AND THE PROLIFERATION OF IT THROUGH THE INTERNET
Let’s Play videos are videos that consist of streamers recording themselves playing video games. This is the most common definition of a let’s play, but it was not always like that. According to Youtuber, The Game Theorists, Let’s Play originated from a “Something Awful” forum thread. In 2005, an anonymous blogger created a thread called “Let’s play, Oregon Trail”. Instead of it being a stream it was a thread of screenshots with text commentary. The user would make decisions based off user comments in the forum. This then started a chain reaction of “Let’s Play” with the same format on the same website. Two year later, while Youtube was just beginning, the first video “Let’s Play” came to be. From that point on,, gamers across the worldwide web found another way to communicate and enjoy games with others. Now in 2018, Let’s Play has become a very popular genre of videos. People can showcase their personalities to attract a larger audience, and have found riches in Youtube. Four out of the top ten Youtubers are mainly “Let’s Play” youtubers. (NOT DONE)

Video Games have been common accuser for making children violence, and the cause for mass shootings throughout the years. Many studies have proven that this is not true, and if anything it provides a safe way for people to release their anger and violent tendencies. The bigger concern is the addictive nature of gaming. Recently the World Health Organization has now recognized gaming addiction as an mental health conditions. The most obvious symptoms are: increased priority to gaming, escalation of gaming when faced with negative consequences and lack of control over gaming (Wakefield). However, even though WHO has recognized it as a mental health problem many people still choose to undermine it.
