Artificial Intelligence has always been important in the minds of scientist and science fiction writers. iRobot, Neuromancer, Do Andriods Dream of Electric Sheep, and countless others try to capture the wonderful and dangerous capacities of AI technology. I want to study how artificial intelligence has been created in our own reality, compared to the history of AI in fictional stories. The shortcomings of artificial helpers like Alexa, and Siri compared to the danger posed by Hal 9000. How far is too far? How much more real do we need AI to be? Microsoft proved that they can make a twitter AI bot, but also proved the dangers of letting the AI populate its own knowledge. How do we teach the AI to learn without learning too much? What is true AI? There are so many questions that I haven’t answered, but I hope to explore throughout the semester.
