For my final project, I would like to explore the relationship between social media’s food culture and its real-life implications for culture and society. With the rise of not only Instagram, Snapchat, and Facebook, where people post footage that they perceive to be appealing to their followers, but of other outlets such as BuzzFeed Food and Tasty, there is an enormous social media movement around food. Whether it’s Instagram snaps from accounts solely dedicated to photos of outlandish cheesy, fried goodness, or a food blogger’s pictures of a paleo, vegan, gluten free concoction, images of food are everywhere. I would like to investigate not only the effects this trend might have on young people’s psychological well-being, but their objective, physical health as well. I am going to be using a combination of scholarly sources, newspaper articles, and information I will be gathering from talking with my own peers—young university students. While I’m not yet exactly sure what direction the project will take, I am hopeful that with some research and deeper investigation, there are patterns to be discovered and a discussion to be had surrounding the relationships between people, social media, and food.
